Science of Extraction

Essential Processing and Extraction uses advanced supercritical COâ‚‚ extraction as a primary extraction method to separate valuable cannabinoids, terpenes, and plant-based compounds from validated dried cannabis. This process uses carbon dioxide in a controlled supercritical state, where COâ‚‚ behaves with properties of both a liquid and a gas, allowing efficient extraction without relying on harsh chemical residues. In contrast to hydrocarbon or alcohol-based extraction methods, supercritical COâ‚‚ can be precisely tuned for targeted extraction, supporting high yields, product purity, and safer refinement pathways.

Our extraction science is built around precision, purification, and consistency. After primary extraction, the crude cannabis oil can move through refinement stages such as decarboxylation, winterization, rotary evaporation, short-path distillation, and cannabinoid isolation to create purified oils, distillates, and formulation-ready ingredients.

Cannabis contains naturally occurring cannabinoid acids such as CBDA and THCA, which can be converted through controlled decarboxylation into active cannabinoids such as CBD and THC by releasing carbon dioxide:
CBDA → CBD + CO₂
THCA → THC + CO₂

Through this scientific process, Essential Processing and Extraction transforms cannabis biomass into refined cannabinoid oils and high-value ingredients for medical, wellness, consumer product, and B2B applications.

Our extraction process begins with dried cannabis cultivated through Platinum Leaf Farms, our own cultivation platform. This gives Essential Processing and Extraction greater control over plant quality, cultivar consistency, and cannabinoid content before the material enters the extraction process.

The dried cannabis is milled in a filtered, temperature- and humidity-controlled environment to achieve a fine, uniform particle size. This improves standardization, increases extraction-column efficiency, and supports consistent cannabinoid oil production.

By managing cultivation, processing, and extraction within our own business ecosystem, we create a stronger supply chain and a more dependable foundation for high-quality cannabis-derived products.

After milling, the prepared cannabis material moves through a controlled decarboxylation process. This step uses carefully managed heat and time to activate naturally occurring cannabinoid acids found in the plant, converting compounds such as CBDA into CBD and THCA into THC by releasing COâ‚‚.

At Essential Processing and Extraction, decarboxylation is performed under controlled processing conditions to help preserve cannabinoid value while reducing unwanted moisture and protecting the quality of sensitive plant compounds. This process prepares the cannabis biomass for efficient extraction and supports the production of refined oils, distillates, and formulation-ready cannabinoid ingredients.

Supercritical COâ‚‚ extraction allows Essential Processing and Extraction to separate cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis biomass using controlled pressure and temperature. It is a clean, efficient, and scalable extraction method that supports the production of refined oils, concentrates, and formulation-ready cannabinoid ingredients.

Because the process can be precisely adjusted, it is highly suitable for producing consistent, high-quality extracts for commercial cannabis products, research materials, and wellness-focused formulations.

After primary extraction, the crude cannabis oil may contain natural plant materials such as waxes, fats, lipids, chlorophyll, and other unwanted compounds. Winterization is a cold-filtration refinement process used to help remove these impurities and create a cleaner, more purified cannabinoid extract.

At Essential Processing and Extraction, crude extract is combined with a processing solvent such as ethanol and then cooled under controlled conditions. As the mixture reaches low temperatures, unwanted waxes and lipids separate from the oil and can be filtered out, leaving behind a clearer and more refined cannabinoid-rich extract.

This step helps improve the purity, clarity, texture, and stability of the oil before it moves into further refinement stages such as rotary evaporation, distillation, or formulation.

Once unwanted waxes and lipids have been removed, rotary evaporation is used to recover residual ethanol from the refined extract. Under controlled vacuum and temperature conditions, the solvent evaporates while the cannabinoid-rich oil remains concentrated.

The result is a concentrated cannabis resin that is thicker, darker, and more refined, preparing the material for the next stage of purification, distillation, or product formulation.

Short-path distillation is a secondary refinement process used to further purify concentrated cannabis resin. During this stage, cannabinoids are separated from chlorophyll, plant pigments, terpenes, and other remaining compounds under controlled heat and vacuum conditions.

This process helps create a clearer, golden cannabinoid distillate with higher concentration, improved purity, and better consistency. Because refined distillate can become very thick, selected cannabis-derived or botanical terpenes may be added back to improve flow, aroma, flavor, and usability in products such as tinctures, vape formulations, and other cannabinoid-based goods.
